Compris Vineyard

A south-facing estate above Newberg, planted in 1999 and renamed in 2025 when Dru and Erin Allen took it over from its founders. Most listings still have it as Vidon. The Pinot Noir is estate-grown and fermented on native yeast, and the view runs to the Red Hills of Dundee.

Walk-ins welcome Pinot Noir · Chardonnay · Syrah $30 flight Planted 1999

If you are searching for Vidon, you are in the right place. This is the same property and the same vines under new ownership. The old vidonvineyard.com still loads and still lists 2010–2013 as current releases — ignore it. Book through Compris.

The drive is worth the trip on its own. Hillside Drive climbs out of Newberg and keeps going, and near the top the valley opens up below you — rows of vines running down the slope, the Red Hills of Dundee across the horizon. It is the kind of view that makes you understand why someone planted here.

The wine

Ask for As One, the estate Pinot Noir. The 2023 is the current release at $55. Estate fruit, fermented on native yeast, and it tastes like the hillside it came from.

There is also Mountain Echo, a second estate Pinot, and Wavelength, the Chardonnay. They make a Syrah and a sparkling rosé as well.

Who it is for

This is the true Willamette Valley experience. The vineyard is expansive and beautiful and you get every part of it — the vines, the view, the wine, and people who clearly cherish this place.

Dru and Erin Allen took the property on from its founders, and it shows. There is a difference between a vineyard someone owns and one someone loves, and you can taste it.

Who would find it wrong: if you are after a tiny winery — a few barrels, the winemaker pouring beside the tanks — this is not that. It is a full estate with a proper tasting room. Hundred Suns is the opposite end of that, twenty minutes away.

What to expect

Three places to sit: a terrace above the vines, a covered patio with heaters and blankets, and the room inside. Dogs are welcome outdoors. Flights are $30, and there are charcuterie boards if you want to stay a while.

Reservations are advised and walk-ins are welcome when there is space, which makes this an easy one to add to a day. If there are more than six of you, call ahead. Everyone in the group counts toward the booking, including children and anyone not tasting.

Stunning and picturesque, with the feel that the people who took it over are in love with this valley.

About the name

Don and Vicki Hagge planted the vineyard in 1999 and named it after themselves — Vicki and Don. When Dru and Erin Allen took it on, they chose Compris, meaning included, understood. Aaron Kendall farms the vineyard and makes the wine.

If you search for Vidon you will still find the old website, with releases from 2010 on it. Book through Compris.
